Camden Residence, London, UK / EBBA Architects

Architecture and design studio EBBA has recently completed a unique renovation of a traditional terraced house in London’s Camden, combining contemporary innovation and the storied charm of London’s architectural vernacular. With a focus on connecting different spaces and maximizing natural light, EBBA‘s renovation of the residence breathes new life into the home while maintaining its historical integrity.

Having not undergone any restoration work since the client’s purchase fifteen years ago, EBBA’s renovation focused on seamlessly connecting different areas of the house to create a more unified living space. They also opened up the back of the house to welcome in natural light and added a stylish office space that flows effortlessly into the garden.

In keeping with the original architecture and drawing inspiration from the intricate metalwork found on Victorian balconies typical of terraced houses in the area, EBBA designed a stunning double-height extension that elegantly bridges two existing structures. This extension not only enhances the interior space but also beautifully frames the garden view, transforming the living room’s exterior view into a captivating interior focal point.

The carefully crafted design of the extension strikes a balance between boldness and subtlety, blurring the boundaries between inside and outside by strengthening the connection between the interior and the lush greenery of the garden. The addition of a double-height void floods the house with sunlight, linking the ground floor to the living room and study, and the garden is now seamlessly integrated into the home with expansive doors leading to a brick terrace.

Custom-made joinery serves a specific purpose in every area of the house, from a spacious island in the kitchen to unique pieces in the bedroom and master ensuite. A traditional Japanese bath becomes a focal point in the ensuite, surrounded by textured clay walls for a tranquil retreat.

EBBA’s choice of sustainable materials, such as timber joinery and off-white clay tiles, creates a warm and inviting atmosphere, complemented by dark accents that provide a striking contrast. The redesigned Camden residence embodies EBBA’s dedication to creating innovative and eco-friendly spaces that seamlessly blend indoor and outdoor living.
